Living with a genetic disorder and being neurodivergent shaped much of my early life. I often found comfort not in people but in the quiet, unconditional presence of animals. As a child, I couldn’t have a dog of my own, so I spent countless hours at family members homes, so I could be surrounded by their dogs. Those moments sparked a deep connection that would guide my path for years to come.
Early Life and Finding Solace in Animals
Growing up with a genetic disorder meant facing challenges that many don’t see. Social situations often felt overwhelming, and I found it easier to connect with animals than with people. Dogs, in particular, offered a kind of companionship that felt safe and healing. My family member's dogs became my refuge, a place where I could be myself without judgment or pressure.
This early bond planted the seed for what would later become a mission: to share the healing power of dogs with others, especially those who might feel isolated or struggle with their emotional wellbeing.
A Life-Changing Moment and the Arrival of Jinx
In 2016, my life took a dramatic turn when I suffered a cardiac arrest. The experience was terrifying, but it also brought clarity. Shortly after, I was blessed with Jinx, my soul dog. Jinx has been more than a pet; she has been a guardian and a source of strength through some of my darkest moments.
Over the past ten years, Jinx has saved me multiple times, both physically and emotionally. Her presence has been a constant reminder that healing can come in many forms. This personal experience deepened my belief in the power of dog therapy and dog support, especially for people facing health challenges.
Transitioning Careers and Pursuing Psychology
After losing my banking job due to my disability, I decided to take control of my future by studying psychology and counselling. Managing my health issues alongside my studies was tough, but my passion for helping others kept me going. For my dissertation, I focused on how dogs impact human wellbeing, combining my academic interests with my personal experiences.
This research confirmed what I had long felt: dogs play a vital role in emotional wellbeing. They offer companionship, reduce stress, and provide a unique kind of support that can’t be replicated by other means.
Combining Passions: Animals and Helping People
My two greatest passions - animals and helping people - came together naturally. I believe everyone should have access to dog time, even if they can’t have a dog of their own. This belief led me to create a community focused on wellbeing events that bring dogs and people together.
One example that stands out is a disabled friend who cannot have his own dog. He describes Jake, our emotional support pup, as his best friend and perfect medicine. Seeing firsthand how dog support improves mental health for people like him inspires me every day.
The Healing Power of Dog Therapy
Dog therapy is more than just spending time with dogs. It’s a proven way to improve emotional wellbeing by:
Reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation
Lowering anxiety and stress levels
Encouraging social interaction and connection
Providing comfort during difficult times
Wellbeing events that include dog therapy sessions create safe spaces where people can relax, share, and heal. These gatherings have helped many participants feel more connected and supported.
Building a Community Around Canine Companionship
Founding this healing community was a natural step. It’s a place where people from all walks of life can experience the benefits of dog support without the responsibility of owning a dog. We organize regular wellbeing events that focus on mental health, emotional support, and the joy that dogs bring.
Our community welcomes dog lovers, care homes, and anyone seeking comfort and connection. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing stories of how dog therapy has improved their lives.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Access to Dog Support
My goal is to expand access to dog therapy and dog support, especially for those who face barriers like disability, time constraints, or living situations that don’t allow pets. I want to create more opportunities for people to experience the healing power of dogs through wellbeing events and outreach programs.
By sharing my story and building this community, I hope to inspire others to recognize the value of canine companionship in emotional wellbeing.
