The Power of Dog-Assisted Wellbeing: Our Pilot Session Impact

Today marked a significant milestone for Pause with Paws CIC.

The day began with collaboration. We spoke with Aisha from The Happiness Hub Derby CIC about how our services complement one another and how, by working together, we can create stronger, more connected community support. Collaboration, not competition, builds sustainable wellbeing.

We also had discussions with Erewash Borough Council about our work and its growing impact within the community.

But the highlight of the day was our pilot care home session.

From the moment we arrived, anticipation filled the lounge. Residents gathered, curious and excited.

What followed was a powerful reminder of why dog-assisted wellbeing matters.

Several residents who initially stated they did not like dogs chose to observe from a distance. As the session progressed, many naturally joined in. By the end, some were walking us out and waving goodbye.

Gentle, rhythmic stroking visibly calmed nervous systems. We observed softened posture, deeper breathing, relaxed facial expressions and increased engagement.

Residents shared stories of dogs they had loved in years gone by. Names were remembered. Memories resurfaced.

One particularly touching moment involved a gentleman who had been cuddling a teddy dog before we arrived. When he saw our team, his face lit up. He cuddled our dogs and referred to them as “Fudge,” the name of his beloved pet from the past. This moment reflected the deep neurological link between memory, emotion and sensory experience.

We also visited a 100-year-old bedbound resident. She described the dogs as the most wonderful she had ever seen and expressed how much she loved them. Even at 100 years old, joy and connection remain powerful.

Importantly, staff also participated. Carers took short breaks to regulate, connect and reset through gentle interaction with the dogs. Supporting wellbeing within care environments must include those who provide the care.

This pilot session reinforced the value of dog-assisted interventions in:

• Nervous system regulation

• Memory stimulation

• Emotional connection

• Social engagement

• Staff wellbeing

We are incredibly proud of what was achieved and excited about what lies ahead.

Pause with Paws CIC exists to bring connection, calm and community through the power of dogs.
