The Power of Paws: Connection, Memory & Movement in Today’s Care Home Session

Today’s visit to one of our local care homes was another beautiful reminder of why Pause with Paws exists.

When we arrived, several residents who hadn’t met us before were sitting in the lounge. The moment they spotted the dogs, their faces lit up. There’s something so immediate and disarming about the presence of a calm, gentle dog. We see barriers drop, curiosity spark, and conversation begin

We spent time talking with residents about animals they had loved throughout their lives. For many, these were not just pets, they were companions, protectors, family members. Listening to stories of rescue collies, cats, loyal Alsatians and mischievous Chihuahua crosses opened the door to laughter, nostalgia and heartfelt reflection.

Reminiscence is a powerful wellbeing tool. When residents speak about animals from their past, they reconnect with identity, purpose and moments of joy. These conversations matter.

One of the most special aspects of visiting regularly is witnessing bonds develop over time. Residents now recognise the dogs. They ask about them. They look forward to our sessions. Even more heartwarming is watching residents connect with each other, striking up conversations because they both once had a pet, or because they both adore the way the dogs gently nuzzle for attention.

Today, residents also took part in enrichment activities by filling snuffle mats and snuffle balls with treats. This simple but effective activity encourages:

  • Fine motor skills and hand movement

  • Sensory stimulation

  • Focus and concentration

  • Gentle physical engagement

  • Shared enjoyment and teamwork

As the dogs sniffed out the treats, there was laughter, encouragement and applause. Small moments but deeply meaningful ones.

Wellbeing doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes it’s found in soft fur under your fingertips, shared memories of a beloved pet, or the pride of preparing a treat for a four-legged friend.

We left today feeling grateful - for the smiles, the stories, and the beautiful connections forming week by week.
